Oliver McGowan Training - Tier 1

Course overview

This short, online course equips health and social care staff with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide high-quality, person-centred care for individuals with learning disabilities and autism. It is suitable for all staff involved in supporting these individuals.

Tier 1 consists of a 60-minute virtual workshop via Teams delivered by our team of expert trainers. These are individuals who are trained to deliver the Oliver McGowan tier 1 sessions but who also have the unique perspective of being trainers with a learning disability and/ or autism and will share their own stories to bring the content into a lived perspective.

It equips staff with the right knowledge and skills to ensure positive health and social care interactions for people with a Learning Disability and/or Autism.

Course content

The one-hour course covers the following topics:

  • Understanding learning disabilities
  • Understanding autism
  • Reasonable adjustments
  • Self-reflection on attitudes and behaviours
  • Communication
  • Person-centred support
  • Promoting independence
  • Common misconceptions
  • A positive, respectful approach to care

Course pre-requisites

This is for staff who are NOT patient or client facing, and DO NOT have direct contact with patients or clients.

To attend a tier 1 Oliver McGowan webinar, participants must first have completed Part 1 of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory training in learning disability and autism.  

This is an online element and can be accessed for free through the e-learning course provided by Health Education England
